ABOUT
ME
As a director, I believe in crafting a production that tells the truth of a play or musical; in creating a safe and collaborative space where artists can do their sharpest, clearest work; and in taking the work, but not myself, seriously.
As a playwright, I'm all about characters struggling to confront the mess inside themselves, and the investigation of changes that may be small in distance but are gigantic in depth.
As a theatre person, I'm drawn to stories both light and dark that offer recognizable human behavior, even if it's not particularly pretty, and the quest for connection.

REVIEWS
Seamless storytelling, aided by Hilder's energetic ensemble in what is truly an ensemble show in every sense of the word... A theatrical experience to remember
Playwright David Hilder has a bone to pick with romantic comedy clichés, and those who share his objections will likely appreciate his smart, satirical upending of the genre... Quirky, genre-defying characters.
Director David Hilder confidently delivers.
David Hilder’s direction wisely focuses on the talented actors and McCoy’s taut script. PERFECT TEETH is carefully staged but feels organic, not forced or contrived.
Director David Hilder captures the domestic hysteria with ease and manages a crafty uptown look for his show, opening up the small space in creative ways.
David Hilder has staged the thing masterfully, with a quartet of fine comic performances.
David Hilder's direction is clean and self-effacing.
These two actors make McCoy’s text crackle with excitement, and in director David Hilder’s hands, Perfect Teeth is at times almost painful to watch, as minutes tick by the suspense, almost unbearable, is punctured by a laugh line that allows the audience some sense of sweet relief, only to plunge us back in to the taut pressure of two friends slowly destroying each others lives and livelihoods, unable to stop, empathize or forgive. A masterclass of tension.
Under David Hilder's superb direction, an engaging cast makes you wish this story would not end.
What an absolutely fabulous production, with wonderful singing, incredible choreography that was executed terrifically. Add in an interesting and different set concept and you had a great experience.
David Hilder successfully challenges the age old adage that maybe you actually can miss what you've never had. You should definitely check it out.
Kim McKean and Craig Fox are perfect in the roles of Margarita and Max. Under David Hilder’s meticulous direction, these actors deliver Mr. Igrejas’ script with a comfortable passion.
Some plays linger in the mind long after you see them, and, onionlike, reveal new layers as you peel away what you thought you saw on the surface. Such a work is Manuel Igrejas's HASSAN & SYLVIA, which is premiering at the Fresh Fruit Festival in a beautifully realized production helmed by David Hilder
David Hilder’s direction is clear and unpretentious
Director David Hilder has elicited convincing performances from the entire cast.
David Hilder's play is a whimsical and theatrical concoction – and it takes its central character, the early 30s Francesca, on a far-reaching journey
Under David Hilder’s smart direction, I love these [characters]
Far be it for this reviewer to spoil the end-of-Act-One surprise playwright Hilder has in store for you or the many comic delights of Act Two. Suffice it to say that the surprise is probably not what you're expecting—and there are numerous reasons to return to your seat after intermission...theatergoers in search of romantic comedy with a bite could do no better than to seek it out. Anton's impact may well be insidious, but it's pretty darned appealing as well.
Perfomed with great glee and considerable panache...Director David Hilder has assembled able players and helped them find the right timing and modulation appropriate for the tiny playing space.
Director David Hilder's production...serves this lovely comic fable well, holding the audience rapt.
David Hilder's fast-paced staging works perfectly
There's lots of laughter, lover, anger, sadness and even fear...Hilder not only makes it happen, he helps elevate the play
Well directed by David Hilder in a playing area that is most challenging for any director.
Razor-sharp direction by David Hilder
Director David Hilder exhibits a great appreciation of comic timing and the efficient use of minimum space.
DADDY is a triumph for all three actors, as well as director David Hilder, who gets extra credit for packing so much great stuff into a fast-moving 95 minutes.
Baldly, unabashedly funny
David Hilder's staging is a pleasure...The airy elegance of the production is Barry by way of Hilder.
Director David Hilder finds the humor of the work [and] mines it adeptly on stage.
